Todd (Hyung-Rae) Tarselli
Intro / Bio

My name is Todd (Hyung-Rae) Tarselli. Despite the name of “Tarselli” |
am actually Korcan (adopted.) | am preseatly incarcerated at Pennsylvania
State Comrectional Institution at Greene, (PA’s only Super-Max prison) and |
am curreatly confined in one of their control units.

Lcame i the U.S. in 1980 to be adopted by an American couple in a small
rural town and like many other youths, was very apolitical. However, even
in such a small and protected environment, certain realities of life in the U.S.,
Such as racism, discrimination, classism, prejudics, eic., were very much
obvious.

I came to prison in 1992 and have suffered dirc consequences as a result
of my responding to the world that surrounded me in  negative and
destructive manner. But, over the years (due to extreme study, being in the
company of conscious people and quality self-reflection) I have managed to
develop a clarity of mind and purpose, have matured and realized that growth
‘occurs not only in the body but also of the mind.

Ibegan doing art as a means of relaxing which s00n evolved into self-
expression of ideas and beliefs. | was further cacouraged by people such s
Russell “Maroon” Shoatz to use my art as a means to speak out. Having the
benefits of being in the company of such people, I grew consciously. I began
using artto speak out politically, to ry to bring atteation to the obvious faults
of the system a5 a whole, in hopes of trying to help change the system. My
outspoken criticism of not only prison policies but laws that affect society as
a whole has resulted in harassment and even retaliation by the guards at
S.C.. Greene.

My current placement in the control units is an example of blatant racism
and retaliation. | am currently in the control unit for having art supplies
(black velour art paper) given to me by S.C.1. Greene, in which security
believes I “could have” made a “Ninja suit” and that | “could have” used this
10 escape. I'm not in the control units for anything I actually did, rather for
something someone else thinks I, as an Asian, could have done. It is blatant
racism to equate my being Asian to Ninje, and of course, this is really
nothing more than retaliation for my outspokenness.

Of course, anyone in the progressive movement is welcomed o use any of
my art they might find interesting and hopefully, useful.
